Choosing the chopping board that is right for you |
|
Every kitchen chopping board has two main functions. The first is to protect the work top from being damaged by your knife and the second is to stop your food from becoming contaminated by any germs that maybe on the surface of your work top.
Some claim that a plastic board will protect your food best because they are more hygienic. Others will tell you that wood is best as it repels bacteria and is not as prone to scarring from the blade of your knife. The reality is that almost any type of cutting board is safe provided that it is cleaned regularly and cared for properly. However when you consider what is going to look best in your kitchen, there really is no competition. It has to be wood every time.
When choosing a chopping board your first consideration should be its size. Generally speaking, the bigger your board is, the more versatile and easier to use it will be. Think carefully about your choice however and take into consideration the amount of workspace you have available, as well as the board’s intended use before you buy.
A wooden chopping board can be very heavy and so the larger your board, the more likely you are to want to leave it in one place. And you don’t need a large board for chopping garlic or slicing a lemon!
Your second consideration should be the shape of your board. There are three main shapes to choose between, rectangular, square or round. No particular one is any better than another, it is just a matter of your own taste and what looks best in your kitchen.
Lastly, boards vary in thickness from half an inch or so to several inches thick, so you need to consider whether the thickness you choose will give you a comfortable working height.
Our advice is to buy the best wood cutting board that you can afford and to take good care of it. A good quality board will often become more attractive with age and so there is little reason why one purchased today should not last you a life time.

Maple Kitchen Chopping Board
Two superb boards made of maple. One makes an excellent carving board with a channel routed around the edge to collect all the meat juices in a small well. The other is a large, thick general purpose board that you will not want to move about to often as it is very heavy. |
