Iittala - Birds by Toikka

Oiva Toikka's birds are true masterpieces of the glass blower's art. Only the most expert craftsmen are capable of turning Toikka's visions into reality. It takes 10 years experience as a master glass blower to be able to make the birds. Each bird is unique and individual.

Since 1973 when the first birds in the series, the Flycatchers, were created, Toikka has been calling on an unending source of inspiration to create ever-more amazing glass jewels. The birds are mouth blown at the 215 year old glassworks at Nuutajarvi deep in the Finnish forests.

Oiva Toika was appointed head of the Nuutajarvi works in 1963 where he worked alongside and shared a studio with Kaj Frank.
